Liz is honestly one of the kindest people I've ever met. She has taught me many techniques and given me many tips that have helped me improve my singing greatly. What can I say about Liz? The woman is a genius! Mad as a box of frogs, but OMG does she get results – and quickly!!!
I first met Liz a few years ago when I was privileged to receive her one-to-one coaching. Up to this point I sang in a 50 strong ladies choir, happy to sit at the back and warble along and, to be really honest, mime in the difficult bits. This was due to my total lack of confidence in my own voice. Don’t get me wrong, I am generally a positive, confident person, but I was convinced my voice was “odd”, it wasn’t “conventional” and it really shouldn’t be allowed out on its own.
As part of a group workshop, Liz encouraged me to sing solo, in front of some of my choir peers. I was terrified – but Liz created a bubble around the two of us (don’t ask me how, it’s still a mystery to me) and I felt safe and secure and supported by Liz in our little safe zone. In those minutes, I had an epiphany – I can actually sing! She used a variety of techniques, some straight forward body posture, some more sophisticated use of the shape of the mouth, obviously the usual breathing support stuff, but the magic was in how she got me to use my imagination to shape the sound that emitted from my mouth. The results were amazing – a paradigm shift in my ability.
Following further sessions with Liz – each moving me leaps and bounds ahead in my confidence and technique, I have been asked to perform solos as part of our choir concerts and I have also been asked to perform solo in a charity musical event. I am now working on some new solo pieces and can’t wait for my next session with Liz – who knows where we will get to this time!
I wouldn’t have dreamed any of this was possible before meeting Liz and would definitely never have the confidence to do it! As I said, the woman is a genius and has a special gift for uncovering and developing talent. Fiona
My daughter, Daisy, was fortunate enough to be one of Liz’s students before Liz left Oman. Daisy was a keen beginner, but lacked experience, technique and confidence. Liz was able to put Daisy at her ease, working at a pace that she was comfortable with whilst imperceptibly progressing week by week. Despite a hectic teenager’s schedule, Liz’s singing lessons were eagerly anticipated by Daisy: lessons were always prepared, well structured and left Daisy feeling she had achieved something every week. As exams approached, Liz provided focused tuition with an emphasis on exam technique and gave that all-important boost in confidence. There were never any negatives from Liz – only constructive positives. Daisy went from complete novice to ABRSM Grade 6 Singing Pass with distinction. Moving abroad for her Sixth Form, my daughter entrusted me with the task of finding her a singing teacher who was not only inspiring and knowledgeable about voice work, but someone who was warm, understanding and generous in their manner. Not such an easy task in the Middle East. Thank goodness for Liz. From the moment that she first met her, until the final weeks before Lizzie’s schooling finished, Liz has forged a unique relationship with my daughter. Over the two years that Liz has been teaching Lizzie, my daughter has made fantastic progress. Under Liz’s firm but enthusiastic approach to singing, Lizzie has conquered her fear of singing publically, enjoying performing to over three hundred people in outdoor concerts to embracing a main part in the recent school play. When she leaves her lessons Lizzie is always buzzing with enthusiasm for singing. She loves the structured lessons that incorporate the whole of the body and that nurture not only the voice but the whole person. I can fully recommend Liz Chivers as a singing teacher for both boys and girls. I have been privileged to watch Liz at work with a group of teenage students preparing for a school musical, some of whom had never sung in front of anyone before. As soon as Liz entered the rehearsal space, she commanded their attention and through a range of carefully tailored movement and voice work transformed a number of nervous individuals into a confident and determined ensemble, each student confident and ready to sing solo without a hint of nerves. Within a two hour workshop Liz had won over the hearts of these students and it was fantastic to hear the students warmly thanking her for teaching them and begging her to give them further tuition. Thank you, Liz. You are extraordinary. You made the show a huge success through your imaginative and energetic workshop. What was really impressive was the way that you were able to nurture each voice individually so that the sound remained individual and pure. What an achievement in such a short space of time.
